For the past seven years, Apple has always released an “S” version of the iPhone from the previous year. It started with the 3G in ’08, then the 3GS in ’09, and since then, the pattern hasn’t broke. Now, we can only expect for Apple to follow tradition, and release the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus this September.

Every “S” version of the iPhone, we usually see hardware improvements, new software, but usually inside of a similar chassis and build quality of the previous iteration of the Apple flagship. Nearly one month away from the expected release date of September 25, we have a general idea of what to expect in the new iPhones.

The 6S is expected to feature the same 4.7″ screen alongside the larger 5.5″ Plus model. For the most part, build quality is expected to be the same as the 6/6 Plus, featuring an aluminum casing. However, the new iPhones could feature Series 7000 aluminum, the same aluminum found in the Apple Watch Sport. This stronger aluminum could be in place to prevent another #BendGate incident. Rumors are going around that the iPhone 6S will be 7.1mm, 0.2mm thicker than the 6.9mm iPhone 6. This thicker phone will allow a more rugged design, again to avoid #BendGate, and also to add in Force Touch, a feature that was seen in the Apple Watch and the new Macbook.

As for hardware improvements. The 6S/6S Plus are rumored to feature Apple’s new A9 chip, 2 GB of RAM (finally!), and an all new camera in which is rumored to be the “biggest camera jump yet” as said by John Gruber. Rumors say that the rear camera will have a 12MP shooter that will be able to record 4K video and the front camera will also get a bump up, supporting 1080p 60 fps video, 240 fps slow-mo, and flash capabilities. Considering how good the cameras on the iPhone 6 was, and that this is rumored to be the biggest camera improvement yet, could call for a revolution in smartphone cameras if this camera performs as good as reports.

Those are the main rumors and predictions for the upcoming iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. As for when you can get your hands on these new flagships – according to a leaked email, the phones will be available for purchase on September 25, and pre-orders will start a week prior. If anymore rumors or confirmations come for the new iPhone, I will be sure to keep you updated, and as usual, keep it tuned to NH Tech.
